What is a Client run-time environment and why do we use it?

A Client Run-Time environment is a kind of a sandbox that is used at the run-time to envelop and process an application coded for the same; coded using the same language as the Run-Time Environment is for. This improves security and stability. So for example a Java Development Kit (JDK) would need a java file and it will compile it into a class file. So when we run that class file, it runs by first searching for and then running inside the run-time environment for Java. The Run-time environment for Java is called Java Run-time Environment (JRE). A Client-Runtime Environment is essential for running applications designed using that language. They understand the code that is produced by the compiler and run-it for the end user. The compiler simply converts the source code into a code understandable by the Run-time environment and it is the job of the Run-time environment to run that application for the end-user.

The first step always is to code the program. The source code for the program is written using the syntax for that language. When the compiler compiles that program, it converts that code into an intermediate code that is understood only by the Run-time environment. So when the application runs, it runs by interacting with the Run-time environment and the Run-time environment runs that application. It wraps the application and provides it with all the functionality that it needs. That is why for applications designed using a platform on which the platform needs the Run-time environment to be present for running that application in the target environment we need the Run-time environment to be present on that computer before we run any such application. It is the pre-requisite, it is a necessity, and it is a dependency for that Client Run-time to be present on the target computer before we try to run any application that is designed for it, any application that needs it. Any such application that is designed using any such Platform which requires its Run-time environment for running that application will always need the Run-time to be present on the target environment/computer before the Application is run. So the user is requested to install the Run-time as it is a pre-requisite for running the Application. So if we want to run an application designed using any such platform on a computer, that computer must have the Client Run-time environment present on it before that application is run.

Some examples of such languages and their Run-time environments are:

.NET Framework and the .NET Run-time Environment

Java and the Java Run-time Environment

ADOBE FLASH and the Flash player

Microsoft Silverlight and Silverlight Run-time environment for desktop

Java FX and the JAVA FX Run-time environment
