How to use the Showmeta command

Showmeta is a switch of the Repadmin Support tools utility.

You can use the showmeta command to find data related to a particular Object.

It helps in finding the originating write for the deletion of an object and also it will help you in finding the Orphaned Objects and Lingering Objects in Active Directory.

KB 837932

The correct command needs to have brackets and word GUID= in it work. For example:

repadmin /showmeta "<GUID=a2cd42bb-b4ad-425b-8970-5d3e5b48333c>"

This command will show you output which will look like this:

12 entries.

This provides good information about object and was changed on which DC with version number and date, For example: isDeleted will tell you when the object was marked for deletion and on which DC also it will if you look at the last like it gives information about the server where is ran this command i.e. STRWWDC01, if we collect metadata information from different DCs in domain and we find that compare them we will be able to find where lingering object or orphaned object is.
