DFSR - Recovering a compressed file from staging (BEST-EFFORT WORKAROUND)

Number          :           SOX080610700012

Problem Description

# Issue:

Customer needs a file recovered from the DFSR staging directory.

The file is compressed.

# Environment:

Windows Server 2003 R2

Resolution

# Workaround:

1. Download checked build of Windows Server 2003 SP2 (using x64 or x86 as

necessary) -

x86 -

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=096C54B5-7584-4A85-97E6-251A7606809E&displaylang=en

x64 -

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=BD2576BB-2007-45C6-BFF0-5F0B4509B5A4&displaylang=en

2. Extract the contents with /X

3. Locate the DFSR.EX_ file

4. Use EXPAND.EXE to expand the file out and rename the file to DFSRUT.EXE

5. Create a folder on the root of the *same* drive that has your staging directory

with the file to be rescued - call it DFSRTOOLS.

6. Save the DFSRUT.EXE file into that directory.

7. Go to a CMD prompt, navigate into the DFSRTOOLS directory, and run:

DFSRSUT.EXE /ut /xpress uncompress <FULL_PATH_TO_STAGED_FILE\FILE_NAME.FRX> <SAME

DRIVE>:\DFSRTOOLS\FOO.MAR (replace sample <> with the correct drive name and

paths)

(So for example, here's me running it in my repro, where I rescue a staged file

back to being regedit.exe):

E:\dfsrtools>dfsrut.exe /ut /xpress uncompress

E:\primarytest\DfsrPrivate\Staging\ContentSet{41963F21-6E76-483C-A28B-5F1D969681C7}-

{D9DF7728-A13C-4128-A54A-7338BC4371B3}\11\11-{CD24684A-8AC6-4FE1-B939-F628D101CAC4}-

v11-{CD24684A-8AC6-4FE1-B939-F628D101CAC4}-v11-Downloaded.frx

e:\dfsrtools\regedit.exe

INFO: Reading 19 XPRESS blocks

INFO: File uncompressed successfully

INFO: e:\dfsrtools\regedit.exe: 147748 bytes written

TEST: XPRESSPASSED

No unit test failed.

8. Then run:

DFSRUT.EXE /ut /marshal unmarshal <FULL PATH TO UNCOMPRESSED FILE FROM STEP 7>

<SOME NEW PATH TO SAME NAMED FILE ON SAME DRIVE>

(so for example, I now take the previously uncompressed file and unmarshal the data

so that I now have the real working version in a temp folder I created on the same

drive)

E:\dfsrtools>dfsrut /ut /marshal unmarshal e:\dfsrtools\regedit.exe

e:\temp\regedit.exe

TEST: MARSHALPASSED

No unit test failed.

9. The file in the last destination path is your real file, uncompressed and

unmarshaled. So in my example, e:\temp\regedit.exe.

# Notes:

All DFSRUT operations must be done on *the same drive at all stages*.

This is a limitation of the code - you cannot be using different source and

destination drives ever in the process.

BEST EFFORT SUPPORT ONLY - UNSUPPORTED!

Customers should always be using backups for data retention.
