Wanted to remove DFS root from servers that have been decommissioned.

Wanted to remove DFS root from servers that have been decommissioned.

I was getting “RPC server unavailable” while trying to remove the decommissioned server from the DFS GUI.

I was able to remove the DFS root from the decommissioned server using DFSutil.

DFSutil /unmapftroot /root:\\ABC\dfsroot /server:dc01 /share:dfsroot

-- ABC is the NetBIOS domain name, DFSRoot is the DFS root name, dc01 is a member

server running 2k3 SP1, DFSRoot is the share name on the member server.

> checked event viewer on the same server : no errors

> check health report

> Is DFS and DFSR replicating the same data : NO

>> changed the NIC binding order and made the internal LAN on TOP.

> Ran DFSRINfo.vbs .> Requesting the customer to upload the cab file onto workspace.

> Also there is no hotfix information provided by dfsrinfo.vbs

> creating the workspace for the customer to upload the cab files from both the dc's.

> ran netdiag /v, to check for installed hotfixes: on both the servers.

>> sending the customer the required dfsr hotfixes

>> changed the following registry

HKLM\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

>> checked Packet fragmentation (@ 1472 on both servers), disk space (more than 500 GB available), AD replication (repadmin /showreps) :: all fine

>> checked smb by accessing the two servers via \\Netbios name :: accessible:: smb is correct

P: (Plan)

> customer to reboot the server ppyyz01afs02 and then

> customer to upload the dfsr cab files from both the dc's.

> customer to install the hotfixes

> customer to reboot the dc's after installing both the hotfixes.

> will followup with the customer tomorrow after 4PM EST.

Orphaned DFS Namespace - How to Remove

As taken from: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/2463ce92-7767-4135-b8c7-31c736bdabc2/orphaned-dfs-namespace-how-to-remove?forum=winserverfiles

It seems that you want to know how to delete the orphaned namespace information \\ourdomain.tld\DFS_Test from the DFS Management console. Meanwhile, you can query the current namespace \\ourdomain.tld\DFS_Prod which is on the production server.

As the domain-based DFS configuration stores in the AD database, every time we launch the DFS management console, it will try to retrieve the DFS information from AD.

There are two nodes in AD which stores the information of the DFS:

Node1. Store the DFS Namespace information which shows under the Namespaces node in DFS management console.

CN=DFS-Configuration, CN=System, DC=Domainname, DC=domainsuffix

Node2. Store the DFS Replication group information which shows under the Replication node in DFS management console.

CN=DFSR-GlobalSettings, CN= System, DC=Domainname, DC=domainsuffix

In this case, you may use ADSIedit.msc to delete the orphaned namespace information \\ourdomain.tld\DFS_Testunder the node CN=DFS-Configuration.

1. Launch ADSIedit.msc

2. Connect to "Default naming context" (the domain partition)

3. Expand and locate to the following node:

CN=Dfs-Configuration, CN=System, DC=ourdomain, DC=tld

4. Check if the orphaned namespace CN=DFS_Test is under it, if so, you may delete this node CN=DFS_Test

Afterwards, please run "repadmin /syncall" if there is multiple domain controllers in the environment and then run "dfsrdiag pollad" on all the DFS member servers to manually make them sync the information from AD database.

Then, you may launch the DFS management console and then right-click on the orphaned namespace, and then selectRemove Namespace from Display… if needed.

Hope it helps.
