Monitoring and Troubleshooting the File Replication Service

File Replication Service (FRS) is used for synchronizing the SYSVOL shared folders on domain controllers and for synchronizing DFS link targets on servers running Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003. If you are using Windows Server 2003 R2 and want to keep folders synchronized, we recommend using DFS Replication. You can learn more about DFS Replication by visiting the Distributed File System Technology Center.

If you are using FRS, it is important to ensure that the service is functioning properly and that replicated content is in a consistent state. This page provides links to a number of tools for managing FRS, including both continuous monitoring tools such as Ultrasound and Sonar and snapshot troubleshooting tools such as FRSDiag.

FRS Tools

FRS MOM Management Pack

Download the Microsoft Windows File Replication Service Management Pack for Microsoft Operations Manager 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), including monitoring scenarios, deployment steps, operations tasks, and reference content.

Ultrasound

Use this powerful tool to measure the functioning of FRS replica sets by providing health ratings and historical information of these sets. Ultrasound is a sophisticated monitoring system consisting of WMI providers, a data collection service, a SQL/MSDE database and a powerful user interface.

FRS Monitoring Help File

Investigate this troubleshooting guide that provides step-by-step procedures to help you determine the cause of a number of FRS problems. Download the file to your local computer for browsing.

FRS MOM Management Pack Guide

Ntfrsutl

See a snapshot view of the FRS internal state with this tool that ships with Windows Servver 2003 and is available in %systemroot%\system32. You must have an understanding of the internal operation of FRS to effectively use this tool.

FRSDiag

Use this tool to easily gather FRS related information from specific servers and perform processing on the collected data to detect common failure conditions.

Ultrasound Reporting Pack

Get the details of the Ultrasound schema and sample reporting Web pages with the Ultrasound Reporting Pack.

Ultrasound Scripting Pack

Get useful scripts that import and export settings to and from Ultrasound.

Migrating FRS to DFS Replication

TechNet Webcast: Migrating File Replication Service Replica Sets to Distributed File System Replication (Level 200)

This webcast walks you through the essential steps of migrating from the File Replication service (FRS) to the new Distributed File System (DFS) Replication service available in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2.

Sample Code for Migrating FRS Settings to DFS Replication

This sample code, referenced in the above webcast, migrates FRS configuration settings to DFSRadmin.exe commands. You can use this sample code as part of your migration from FRS to DFS Replication.
