How to resolve most common Snap-in Issues

There may be scenario when you are unable to open the snap-in that you want to work on using the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) Window. The snap-in may fail to load the relevant information due to one or more errors.

To resolve that "snap-in not opening" issue, follow the following action plan.

Action Plan

1.      First check the remote host:

Just make sure that the host is working fine and there are other machines / workstations from where we can open and connect to the host using the snap-in. In this phase, make sure the relative services are running fine. The related ports are open and accepting connection. This can be done using PortQryUI utility. You should check the firewall to check for any open ports if any that needs to be worked upon (i.e. if we need to open ports in the network for communication OR Not).

2.      Lets check the DNS and name resolution

Now, check the things that come in the middle of the local workstation and the remote host:

3.      TCP/IP NetBIOS helper is running

4.      If there more than two NIC cards then check the binding order

5.      Check the SMB Signing both on the local machine and the remote host

Now on the Local machine, check the following:

6.      Check that the dll file that the snap-in needs to function properly is properly registered.

Some common snap-in's, for use in Active Directory are as follows:

Schemamgmt.msc           |

DSA.msc                              |

DSsite.msc                          |                              mmc

Domain.msc                       |

Adsiedit.msc                     |

LDP                                        |

ntdsutil                                                |                      Though this is not a snap-in but it's a command line

                                    |                              utility that comes-in handy for purposes. It can be used from the command prompt
